"This website came to fruition in an attempt to tell the true story the 2/26th Infantry Battalion, (the only Infantry Battalion raised in Queensland; part of the 27th Brigade, 8th Division) played during the Malay Campaign of World War II.... "The 8th Division constituted 14% of the British force but it took 73% of the battle deaths."

Ballarat Ex - POW Memorial

Over 35,000 Australian men and women have experienced being taken captive, incarcerated and then endured interrogations, beatings, torture, hunger and most important of all, the deprivation of liberty. Over 8,000 of these, Australia’s finest men and women, died during their time of captivity.

104 Australians were taken prisoner during the Boer War
200 were captured by the Turks and 3,800 captured on the Western Front during WW1
5,000 fell into enemy hands during the Greece & Crete Campaigns
1,000 in North Africa
1,200 R.A.A.F. Personnel taken in Germany and occupied Europe
6,000 after the fall of Rabaul, Ambon, Timor and Java,
15,000 following the aftermath of Singapore. Numerous members of the R.A.N., Merchant Navy and R.A.A.F. taken in various parts of the world, during World War 2.
29 taken prisoner during the Korean War.

The realisation of a vision over 10 years ago, by a group of dedicated people of a memorial to honour all Australians who have been Prisoners of War, has resulted in the Australian Prisoner of War Memorial at the Botanical Gardens, Ballarat, Australia being dedicated by General Peter Cosgrove on 6th February 2004.
